The life of Swami Akhandanand Saraswati Maharaj is a remarkable journey from spiritual inquiry to the highest realization.
A journey of inquiry, realization and compassionate service to humanity.
Born on Shravana Amavasya, Vikram Samvat 1968, in the village of Mahrai near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He was born into a Sarayuparin Brahmin family and was named Shantanu Vihari.
Astrologers predicted that he would live only nineteen years. Rather than creating fear, this inspired him to search for the truth about life, death, and the eternal Self.
His grandfather introduced him to the Shrimad Bhagavatam. This sacred scripture remained his constant companion throughout his life.
During his spiritual search he met many great saints. They taught him that while death belongs to destiny, the fear of death can be conquered through Self-Knowledge.
From a very young age, Shantanu Vihari possessed an unusual interest in spirituality. Questions regarding life, death, God, and liberation naturally arose within him.
The prediction regarding his lifespan did not discourage him. Instead, it intensified his determination to discover the eternal reality that lies beyond birth and death.
This inner quest eventually led him towards great saints, scriptural wisdom and finally the direct experience of the Supreme Truth.
One of the defining moments of his spiritual life was meeting the great saint Sri Udiya Babaji Maharaj (Swami Poornanand Teerth) .
Babaji's compassion, wisdom, and spiritual discipline deeply influenced him. Under Babaji's guidance, his spiritual journey assumed a clear direction.
Inspired by his Guru, he embraced the path of complete renunciation and dedicated his life to God and humanity.

This marked the beginning of a life completely devoted to the study, teaching and living of Vedanta.
Before taking Sannyasa, Swamiji served for seven years on the editorial board of Kalyan, the renowned spiritual magazine published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur.
During this period he wrote numerous articles and developed the clarity, simplicity and depth that later became the hallmark of his spiritual discourses.
His work at Gita Press helped bring the wisdom of Sanatana Dharma to countless households across India.
